Aerial photos by Hunting Aerosurveys Ltd. from 1955 to 1957 were used by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey for mapping. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1959 after the British skiing pioneer Vivian Caulfeild (1874-1958).
