Johann Jakob Schäppi

Johann Jakob Schäppi (born December 11, 1819 in Horgen , † April 5, 1908 in Zurich ) was a Swiss politician and teacher . From 1885 to 1899 he was a member of the National Council.

biography

Johann Jakob Schäppi was born as the son of the carpenter Johann Schäppi in the Tannenbach community of Horgen. He attended school in Horgen and learned the carpentry trade. He received further training at the “Rudolf Stapfer Private Institute” in Horgen before attending the Küsnacht teacher training college from 1838 to 1839 . He held several teaching positions, from 1839 in Ennenda and later in Altstetten. He studied in Tübingen and Zurich and served as a secondary teacher from 1845 to 1848 in Schlieren and from 1848 to 1868 in Horgen. Johann Jakob Schäppi married Elisabetha Hirzel in 1854.

From 1868 to 1878 Schäppi was the district governor in Horgen and from 1856 to 1868 he was the education councilor. He sat on the Grand Council from 1866 to 1869 and was from 1869 to 1878 and again from 1888 to 1908 for the Democrats. He also represented the state of Zurich in two periods from 1871–72 and again from 1885 to 1899 in the National Council.

Johann Jakob Schäppi moved to Oberstrass in 1887 and was co-founder in 1887, as well as president of the supervisory commission from 1889 to 1899 and teacher at the Swiss specialist school for women's tailoring from 1889 to 1908. His political commitment concerned the school system and in particular the professional training of women. In this direction he was also the author of political writings. Since 1867 he was a leading head of the democrats in the canton of Zurich.
