Celso Golmayo Zúpide

Celso Golmayo y Zúpide (born April 24, 1820 in Logroño , † April 1, 1898 in Havana ) was a Spanish-Cuban chess master .

Golmayo has been recognized as the Cuban national champion since his competitive success over Félix Sicre in 1862. In 1867 he took part in one of the first international tournaments in chess history in Paris , which was won by Ignaz von Kolisch . Golmayo shared 7th and 8th place.

Golmayo played several games against Paul Morphy in Havana in 1864 , including blind games and handicap games (Morphy gave a knight), in the sum of which Golmayo won 3-2. In 1867 Golmayo lost a match against Gustav Neumann in Paris with 0: 3; Golmayo played numerous competitions in Havana: He was defeated by Wilhelm Steinitz in two competitions 2: 9 in 1883 and 0: 5 in 1888. Two matches against Andrés Clemente Vázquez : 7: 0 and 7: 4 (in 1887 and 1890) he won three matches with George Henry Mackenzie 3: 6 and 0.5: 5.5 in 1887, and he lost 4.5: 7.5 in 1888. In 1891 he lost to Joseph Henry Blackburne 4: 6 and in 1893 to Emanuel Lasker with 0.5: 2.5.

He reached his highest historical rating (2612) at the age of 74.

Celso Golmayo y Zúpide was the father of Celso Golmayo y de la Torriente and Manuel Golmayo y de la Torriente .
