The Ayam Cemani is a breed of chicken from Indonesia .

etymology

“Ayam” means chicken in the local language and “Cemani” is a place in Central Java , near Surakarta , where this breed originated.

origin

The chicken was originally widespread in central and eastern Java, Sumatra and Madura . It was first known in Europe in the 1920s through the description of Dutch immigrants from Indonesia. It has been recognized as a breed in the Netherlands since 2003. It was also introduced in Belgium and Germany via the Netherlands.

features

The most noticeable feature of the Cemani is the fact that it is completely black. Not only the plumage, the head attributes ( crest and wattles), but also the eyes, the skin, the flesh, the bones, the claws and almost also the blood are pitch black (the latter has a deep black-red color). The black color is due to a rare but natural genetic characteristic, which is hyperpigmentation known as fibromelanosis .

Due to its long legs and sharp claws, it is considered to be a very agile chicken with a fighting chicken impact . The rooster is of medium length, slender, but becomes a little broader in the front. The comb is a single comb with 4 to 6 teeth and very thick in the tissue. Its flag does not follow the neckline. The hen resembles the rooster in most respects. However, it is not quite as erect.
