Cemento de El Salvador
Cemento de El Salvador SA (short: CESSA ) is the largest cement and building materials company in El Salvador .
CESSA was founded on October 17, 1949 in Acajutla , Departamento Sonsonate . The first rotary kiln went into operation on January 5, 1953, and cement sales began in March of the same year. In July 1956, furnace No. 2 went into production and the production capacity was expanded by more than 2 million bags of cement per year.
In 1965, the production of cement began in Metapán . Oven No. 3 went into operation in 1967 and the company produces more than 7 million bags a year. In April 1979 the expansion took place with the construction of plant 4. In October 1997 the construction of plant 5 began.
In 1998 there was a strategic alliance with the Swiss cement factory Holderbank-Wildegg AG in Holderbank , today Holcim Ltd. one of the world's largest cement producers with headquarters in Rapperswil-Jona in Switzerland. In 2005 Holcim held a 50% stake in Cemento de El Salvador. At this point in time, CESSA already had 500 employees. In 2009 the Swiss company had a share of 90%.
In 2010, Holcim was adopted as a brand name. After an integration process of over 12 years, the brand name Holcim Cessa Portland was introduced.
Holcim El Salvador now operates:
- 2 cement plants in Santa Ana
- 3 concrete plants in Santa Tecla and in San Miguel , with a fleet of around 80 concrete mixing vehicles
- 1 center for waste recycling and waste incineration with an attached power plant in Metapán
- 1 paper mill for the production of cement sacks in Metapán
