Acajutla ( Nawat : Acaxual ) is a port city on the Pacific coast in southwest El Salvador .
In 1524, Spanish conquistadors defeated an army of the Pipil in the area , after which Acajutla became an important port for the Spanish colonial empire .
Acajutla is the main port of El Salvador and handles a large part of its coffee , sugar and balsam (a tree resin) exports . There is also an oil refinery and fertilizer factory in the city . Other important branches of the economy are the fish processing industry and bathing tourism.
