Cemitério Alemão
The Cemitério Alemão is the German cemetery in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon . It is located in the western part of the city in the municipality of Campo de Ourique .
history
The graves of people of German descent in Lisbon are documented as early as 1147 , for example on the north side of the Castelo de São Jorge , in the central sacristy of today's São Vicente de Fora monastery , "German knights" who served as crusaders at the siege of Lisbon are buried participated and fell in the process.
The merchant Nicolaus Berend Schlick from Lübeck donated the site of the cemetery to the German Protestant community in Lisbon in 1822 . In 1859 it was expanded to include a Russian Orthodox department. With the construction of an aqueduct from 1871 the area was greened and planted with trees.
