Cen ( 'tsən ) is the official Pinyin transcription of the Chinese family name ( Chinese   , Pinyin Cén ). Depending on the region and the romanization , it is given as Ts'en ( Wade-Giles ) and Shum , Sam in Cantonese . In the Chinese classic of the Song Dynasty , the "Hundred Family Names " , Cen is in 67th position. In 2008 it was the 235th most common name in China, and was used by around 340,000 people. In Vietnamese the name is given with sầm, sum, xờm ; jam, eum in Korean , Sham or Sum in other Chinese dialects. Occasionally the name is also given with Shen, Qin, Chen or Sun again.

The Cen Clan

The Cen clan was founded in the early 5th century AD by the sons of Cen Zi . There was a military code that was adhered to as a clan code and handed down in writing. However, this was lost in the Chinese Civil War .
