Mahinur Qasim

Mahinur Qasim ( Uighur ماھىنۇر قاسىم; Chinese  玛依 努尔 · 哈斯 木 , Pinyin Mǎyīnǔ'ěr Hāsīmù , also: Maynor Kasim ; * August 15, 1929 ) is a retired Uighur politician from Xinjiang , People's Republic of China . She is the widow of Ehmetjan Qasimi , a prominent revolutionary from Xinjiang.

Mahinur Qasim was born in Huocheng (Korgas) in Ili in 1929 . Some sources place her birthplace in the Panfilov district , Soviet Union . Her mother died very early and she had to work as a child. In 1945 she was married in Yining to Ehmetjan Qasimi, a leader of the Second East Turkestan Republic (ETR, شەرقىي تۈركىستان جۇمھۇرىيىتى 東突厥斯坦 共和國). At the same time she became his secretary. The couple had a son and a daughter. In 1948, after the leadership of the ETR was ready to form a coalition with the Chinese national government of the Guomindang , Mahinur became a member of the Standing Committee of the Union Women's Committee for the Protection of Peace and Democracy in Xinjiang . After the death of her husband in a plane crash on August 27, 1947, Mahinur continued her political career.

In civil service

In 1951 she became deputy director of the women's association in the autonomous region of Ili. In 1952, she even became mayor of Yining and joined the Chinese Communist Party . In 1953, she became the deputy director of the Central Bureau of the Xinjiang Provincial Government and director of the Xinjiang Women's Association. She was a delegate at the Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese People (elected in 1954) and a member of the Second and Third National People's Congresses (1959, 1964).

During the Cultural Revolution , she fell victim to the purges and was persecuted, but later rehabilitated. In the 1980s and 1990s she was the Vice-Chairperson of the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th All-Chinese Women's Association . In 1988 she was elected to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. She has always been a prominent advocate of women's and children's rights. In 2003 she retired and only appeared as a speaker at events on the topic of women's rights.
