Silver Sands State Park is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the area of ​​the municipality of Milford . It consists of 120 hectares (297 acres) of beach, dune landscape, salt marshes, meadows and forests. The park offers opportunities for swimming in Long Island Sound , picnicking, hiking, and bird watching. In this area there is also the bird sanctuary Charles Island with 5.7 hectares. There are rumors that the treasure of Captain Kidd is also hidden there. The Walnut Beach municipal reserve is attached to the park . The main entrance is on Meadowside Road in Milford.

The area was acquired after Hurricane Diane . The storm destroyed 75 homes in the area in 1955. To the area include the creeks of Fletcher's Creek and Nettleton Creek . There was a rubbish dump there until 1977. Soil analyzes showed pollution with heavy metals. In 1997 a project was started to renaturalize the wetlands of the coast. The park was renewed according to plans that were presented in 1990 by the architect Alfredo De Vido . In 2000 the program was completed.

When the tide is low, visitors can hike to Charles Island on the tombolo . The forested interior of the island is under protection for various heron colonies. Some of the largest colonies in the state are located here. The ruins of a Catholic hermitage from the 1920s are still on the island.

A boardwalk with a railing leads from the parking lot to the beach and continues there. In the salt marshes you can still see the remains of the buildings that were destroyed by the hurricane. There is also an old path that runs through the park from east to west. The park is a popular place for bird watching. the most common are terns foraging on the coast. In addition, the park is also a wintering area for birds of prey such as the buzzard , snowy owl and short -eared owl .
