The Centene Corporation is a US provider of insurance services in the field of health care. Centene occurs primarily as a provider of Medicaid - and Medicare benefits and is working with the governments of the respective states and the US federal government in these areas. The company claims to serve over 8.6 million Medicaid members and over 400,000 Medicare beneficiaries in the United States. The company also provides health services for prison inmates .
Centene was founded in 1984 as a non-profit organization to implement a Medicaid plan under the name "Family Hospital Physician Associates". The founder, former hospital accountant Elizabeth Brinn, started out from the basement of a hospital in Milwaukee . It wasn't until 1995 that the company expanded into the state of Indiana. In 1997, the company was renamed "Centene" and the headquarters moved to St. Louis, Missouri. Centene went public in 2001 with annual sales of $ 327 million and 235,000 customers. Three years later, in 2004, sales exceeded the $ 1 billion mark for the first time. In the following years several competitors in the insurance industry were taken over.
Centene is one of the largest US companies in terms of sales and was ranked 61st on the Fortune 500 in 2018 .
