Center for Advanced Internet Studies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) is an interdisciplinary research college funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . The CAIS is dedicated to researching the social opportunities and challenges of digital transformation. In order to understand this complex process of digital transformation and to shape it responsibly, research is necessary that reacts quickly to current developments, exchanges information on an interdisciplinary basis and engages in conversation with citizens and stakeholders from practice.

In addition, the CAIS would like to actively shape the social, political and economic change triggered by digitization and promote the dialogue between science and society. B. as part of the annual CAIS forum.

The CAIS was founded in November 2016 in the legal form of a non-profit GmbH. Its shareholders are the Ruhr University in Bochum , the University of Duisburg-Essen , the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf , the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and the Grimme Institute in Marl. The CAIS began its work in Bochum in spring 2017.

Research funding

The CAIS offers funding opportunities for fellows, working groups and events. Scientists and committed personalities from the field can apply.

On application, innovative projects that deal with the social opportunities and challenges of digital transformation and develop perspectives for practice are funded. The funding program is basically open to all disciplines and areas of investigation as well as to basic research and application-oriented projects. The decisive factors for funding are excellence, topicality, social relevance and interdisciplinary connectivity of the projects.

Research projects

Various research projects have been carried out at CAIS since the beginning of 2020. These examine different aspects of digital transformation.

So far, six projects have been brought together under the umbrella of the research incubator. They ask questions about artificial intelligence, sustainability, open science and science communication. The research teams are based at various partner institutions as well as at the CAIS itself. In the research incubator, the CAIS promotes the interdisciplinary cooperation of the projects and tests forms and instruments of agile science.

The projects in detail:

  • Opinion monitor Artificial Intelligence (Research partner: Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf
  • Artificial intelligence in government and administration (research partner: German University of Administrative Sciences Speyer )
  • AI governance: Artificial intelligence as a subject of political control (research partner: University of Duisburg-Essen)
  • Digitization of sustainable behavior (research partner : RWI Essen )
  • Open Science: New Opportunities for the Relationship Between Researchers and the Researched? (Research partner : GESIS , Cologne)
  • Science communication in digitization research (Center for Advanced Internet Studies)

PhDNet @ CAIS

The CAIS also promotes the training and networking of doctoral candidates who deal with the individual and social consequences of digitization. This takes place within the framework of the interdisciplinary PhDNet. Doctoral candidates can establish contacts there across disciplines, exchange experiences and acquire practical skills (e.g. in the field of digital methods).

Outlook: Foundation of a new institute for digitization research

CAIS developed the concept for an institute for digitization research in North Rhine-Westphalia. The institute will actively participate in the social and technological shaping of the digital transformation. Research will focus on the potentials and challenges of digital transformation for people.

The sponsoring group of the planned institute consists of the Ruhr University Bochum, the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster, the GESIS - Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences, the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Grimme Institute.

The concept for the institute was presented to the public on February 11, 2020 in the Düsseldorf house of the university, and the institute is expected to be founded in spring 2021.
