The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) is a research institution in Berlin . It "explores the development of the Internet from a social perspective with the aim of better understanding the associated digitization of all areas of life."

The institute was founded by the shareholders - the Humboldt University of Berlin , the Berlin University of the Arts , the Berlin Science Center for Social Research and the Hans Bredow Institute for Media Research in Hamburg as an integrated cooperation partner. The research directorate is made up of Jeanette Hofmann , Ingolf Pernice , Björn Scheuermann , Wolfgang Schulz and Thomas Schildhauer .

Together with the Oxford Internet Institute , the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society and other institutes, HIIG founded the Global Network of Internet & Society Research Centers.

Start-up initiative

The founding institutions and sponsors include the Humboldt University of Berlin , the Berlin University of the Arts and the Berlin Science Center for Social Research . In cooperation with the Hans Bredow Institute for Media Research in Hamburg as a fourth partner, the research institute wants to bring together leading scientists and actors from all walks of life to research questions about the Internet . The focus of interest is on the topics of innovation and regulation as well as the specialist areas of information law , media law and constitutional law . The declared aim of the founding initiative was to be able to better understand the changes in society caused by the Internet.

The four founding directors are Ingolf Pernice (Humboldt University), Thomas Schildhauer (University of the Arts) and Jeanette Hofmann (Science Center) as well as Wolfgang Schulz (Hans Bredow Institute). The start-up financing was taken over by Google Inc. with 4.5 million euros over a period of three years. Scientific independence is to be implemented in a legally secure manner through a special construction from a research and funding company: an independent research company with the control committee Scientific Advisory Board is responsible for the objectives and content of the research. The work of the institute began in October 2011. It was founded in March 2012. The Internet and Society Foundation is now a partner in HIIG.

Research Programs - Research Questions

The HIIG research program is based on three central research questions:

  • The development of the digital society: What relevant concepts and theoretical approaches are there?
  • The relationship between actors, data and infrastructures in the digital society: what are key factors for change?
  • The knowledge dimension: can new patterns of research and knowledge transfer be observed in the digital age?

Selected research projects include opening science, social media governance, empirical copyright research, and global privacy governance.

advancement

The establishment of the institute was initiated by a sponsorship from Google . Further sponsors and supporters are the Federal Ministry of Education and Research , the Federal Ministry of Economics , the German Research Foundation , the innogy Foundation , the Volkswagen Foundation , the dwerft alliance of the BMBF, Cisco and KPMG .

Events and knowledge transfer

The digital salon has been held once a month at the institute since 2012 and is broadcast live in collaboration with the Berlin Cooperative. In addition, the HIIG organizes scientific conferences, e.g. B. the AoIR 2016 of the Association of Internet Researchers , workshops, talks and lecture series. In a series of events launched in 2017, the HIIG, together with the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb), invites “European thinkers” to share their thoughts on the digital society and thus to gain a better understanding of comprehensive transformation processes.

The HIIG develops various formats for the exchange between science, politics, business and civil society. In addition to numerous events and workshops, the HIIG offers a platform for knowledge transfer through the Digital Society Blog and the podcast Exploring digital spheres.

On November 6, 2019, the HIIG held an evening event with free admission in the Urania with the speaker Shoshana Zuboff under the title Shoshana Zuboff: Surveillance Capitalism and Democracy .

In cooperation with the bpb , the HIIG held an evening event at HAU 1 with free entry with the speaker Sybille Krämer under the title Kulturgeschichte der Digitisierung / Cultural history of digitization with a simultaneous translation into English.
