Hans-Jürgen Schings

Hans-Jürgen Schings (born February 27, 1937 ) is a German specialist in German .

Life

Hans-Jürgen Schings received his doctorate from Gerhard Fricke in Cologne in 1965 and completed his habilitation in Mainz in 1975. From 1974 to 1981 he was a full professor at the University of Würzburg , from 1981 to 1986 at the University of Heidelberg , from 1986 to his retirement in 2005 at the Free University of Berlin . His main areas of research and teaching include German literature from the Baroque period, the Enlightenment, the Goethe era and classical modernism. Since his habilitation thesis on melancholy and enlightenment in literary anthropology, a research field in which he has stimulated numerous studies, he has been particularly interested.

Schings was a visiting professor at the University of Kansas (1981) and the University of California , Los Angeles (1990 and 1993), as well as at Nihon University , Tokyo (2000) in Japan .

His students include Peter-André Alt , Gundula Ehrhardt, Monika Fick , Werner E. Gerabek , Alexander Košenina , Stephan Porombka , Wolfgang Riedel , Hedwig Richter and Norbert-Christian Wolf .

On the occasion of his 65th birthday, the commemorative publication Prägnanter Moment was dedicated to him in 2002 .
