The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society is an interdisciplinary research center at Harvard University that specializes in Internet research. Formerly part of Harvard Law School , the institute has traditionally dealt with legal and regulatory issues relating to the Internet. Since May 15, 2008 the institute has been a university-wide initiative of Harvard University.

history

The Berkman Center for Internet & Society was founded in 1998 by Professors Jonathan Zittrain and Charlie Nesson. It is named after the Berkman family, former owners of The Associated Group , who contributed $ 5.4 million to founding the institute. Since 1998 the center has grown from a small project within Harvard Law School to an interdisciplinary research center at Harvard University .

Some sister institutions have been inspired by the Berkman Center 's research focus , including the Stanford Center for Internet and Society and the Oxford Internet Institute . On 5 July 2016, the Research Center for a donation of 15 million was US dollars by Michael R. Klein to Berkman Center for Internet & Society Klein renamed.

Main research areas

The main research focus at the Berkman Klein Center is the influence of social and societal contexts on the development of Internet technologies and how these in turn change society. Research topics include youth and media, surveillance , privacy , digital arts , internet governance , cloud computing , and internet censorship . The center strives to incorporate research results directly into internet law , internet regulation and the future technical development of the internet. The Berkman Klein Center sponsors events, lectures and conferences on the topic of the Internet and regularly invites visiting scholars and post-doctoral students.

Projects and initiatives

Citizen Media Law Project (CMLP)

The Citizen Media Law Project (CMLP) is a project of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society . The aim of the project is:

  1. To advise and provide resources to individuals and groups involved in online and grassroots journalism .
  2. The promotion of participatory journalism .
  3. Protecting freedom of expression on the Internet.

Digital Public Library of America (DPLA)

The Digital Public Library of America is a project that aims to create a comprehensive and freely accessible public library .
