Martin Rennert

Martin Rennert (born July 2, 1954 in New York City ) is a musician and was President of the Berlin University of the Arts from 2006 to early 2020 . He has been a member of the board of the Einstein Foundation Berlin since February 2020.

Life

Martin Rennert studied from 1967 in Vienna (with Robert Brojer , concert exam 1975), Graz and Granada classical guitar. From 1972 he performed worldwide mainly as a soloist , but also as a chamber musician . Radio productions, film portraits, records and CDs emerged in the following decades.

Rennert has published numerous works for guitar in various publishers (UE, Schott, Doblinger). Since 1985 he has been a professor of concert guitar at the Berlin University of the Arts and, in addition to his concert activities, offered annual master classes in many countries until 2007. Many of his students have prominent positions at conservatoires and perform in concerts.

From 1989 to 1995 Martin Rennert was Dean of the Faculty of Music, from 1995 to 1997 President of the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA), which he co-founded in 1990, an association of European art, design and music colleges and other cultural institutions.

In December 2003 he was elected First Vice President of the Berlin University of the Arts, in December 2005, after the death of his predecessor Lothar Romain, as its President. In 2009 he was confirmed in office for another five years, and in 2014 he was elected a third time for another five years.

Rennert is an honorary member of ELIA and from February 2020 a member of the board of the Einstein Foundation Berlin. From 2011 to 2018 he was a member of the Broadcasting Council of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg ( rbb ) and for several years a member of the supervisory board of Arte . In April 2019, Martin Rennert was newly elected to the board of directors of the rbb. In addition, during his tenure as President of the UdK Berlin, Rennert was Deputy Chairman of the Berlin State Conference of Rectors and Presidents of Berlin Universities and Colleges (LKRP) as well as spokesman for the artistic universities in the LKRP.

Martin Rennert wrote articles u. a. on cultural policy published in European daily newspapers and periodicals. From 1982 he produced and moderated radio and television programs in German and English for Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF).

He is the father of three daughters.
