from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR, free translation: Center for International Forest Science ) is one of 15 specialized research centers (Future Harvest Centers) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and is based in Bogor , Indonesia . It was founded in 1993 as a consequence of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED).

CIFOR has set itself the goal of promoting forest science and supporting those groups of the population who are directly dependent on forest products . The aim is to promote sustainable, i.e. both intergenerational and intrageneratively fair and ecologically sustainable, forestry.

task

The task of the CIFOR is to secure the livelihood of population groups who are dependent on the forest. The forest is recognized as an outstanding ecosystem that can be more or less unstable depending on the vegetation zone . The CIFOR sees the focus of the task in the protection of the still existing tropical rainforests , but above all in their sustainable management. The three main tasks are:

  • The promotion and improvement of forest science and the incorporation of the results into (sustainable) silviculture
  • The promotion of technologies and the creation of technologies to achieve sustainability in the forest and wood sector
  • Promotion of local partners to increase the efficiency of silviculture

execution

In order to achieve this goal, the CIFOR draws up criteria and indicators (K&I) that are intended to serve as the basis for local approaches to sustainable development. This then often takes place in (new) certification measures . With these criteria and indicators, CIFOR is following new development aid strategies .

The CIFOR employs around 150 people. In addition to the headquarters in Bogor, there are also branches in Cameroon , Brazil and Zimbabwe . CIFOR works in around 30 countries with around 300 researchers in universities and other research groups and organizations.
