history

In 1907, Alois Eckstein, born near Marienbad in 1883, bought an old building on a corner in Potschappel to open his own department store there. Eckstein was previously employed in Dresden. His shop opened on September 27, 1907 and offered a wide range of goods. Since there were only a few large shopping opportunities for the growing population of the Döhlen Basin, Eckstein quickly made large profits, so that from June 1913 he had a more representative and larger building built. The old department store was first torn down, followed by the opening of the “Central department store” in the new building in December. This extended over several floors and still offered gift items of all kinds for the Christmas business.

During the First World War Eckstein was called up for military service, during which time his wife ran the business. After 1924, the business situation, which was moderate due to inflation at the beginning of the decade, improved again, and Eckstein had up to 45 employees. When the National Socialists came to power, the Jewish Eckstein family soon had to flee Germany. The department store was taken over by Herbert Dahl. After the end of the Second World War , the HO took over the building, opened a shop in January 1949 and in 1952 the "HO-Kaufhaus Magnet". Previously, extensions were made to the house in the direction of the railway systems.

After the fall of the Wall, the NKD retail chain ran a shop in the former Central department store from 1990 to 2001, after which the complex was empty. A concept to use the building and the neighboring buildings for age-appropriate apartments failed in 2012 due to the high renovation costs. From the spring of 2013, a renovation began with a different concept, which provided for the furnishing of apartments. Since there is a high level of vacant retail space on Dresdner Strasse, these were also converted into living space by the beginning of 2014.
