Centralia massacre (1864)

The Centralia Massacre was a massacre during the American Civil War . It occurred on September 27, 1864 on the St. Louis to Macon Railway , which was administered by the St. Louis, Kansas City and Northern Railroad .

Of Bloody Bill Anderson and William Quantrill led fighters, a guerrilla force , the Union troops fought in western Missouri, held in the town's station Centralia a train and tortured and murdered 22 therein unarmed Union soldiers after the Battle of Atlanta on the way were home. When the soldiers were dead, the Bushwhackers scalped their bodies or otherwise desecrated them. Then they set fire to the train and the station to block the passage for subsequent trains. All other train passengers were robbed beforehand.

Only one sergeant of the Union Forces was left alive to serve as a hostage if necessary. He later escaped when the Bushwhackers crossed the Missouri River near Rocheport with him .

Even Frank and Jesse James were involved in the Centralia Massacre.

After the massacre

Shortly afterwards, pursuing Union troops of the 39th Missouri Mounted Infantry Regiment under the command of Major AVE Johnston took up the pursuit of the killers. The Union soldiers were, however, captured in an ambush by Anderson, who had in the meantime met with other partisan commanders, such as George Todd : Since the Union troops were still armed with outdated single-shot muzzle-loading muscles, they had the partisans, who had percussion revolvers, little to oppose and were killed.

About 120 of the prisoners were then brutally murdered by Anderson's men. Their corpses were also scalped, beheaded, or otherwise violated.
