The Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), formerly the NATO Undersea Research Center (NURC), before that SACLANT Undersea Research Center and SACLANT ASW Research Center (SACLANTCEN), is a NATO research and technology center . Since 1959 it has been researching military aspects of marine research with a focus on water noise .

The CMRE is located in the northern Italian city ​​of La Spezia and reports to the Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT) (formerly Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic SACLANT) in Norfolk , Virginia , USA . The CMRE is funded directly by the majority of NATO nations.

The CMRE has two research vessels , the larger Alliance and the smaller Leonardo .
