In trauma surgery, an osteosynthesis technique in the context of bone fracture treatment is referred to as cerclage ( French for 'looping') .

Certain bone fracture forms can be treated by wrapping the previously established fragments with a metal wire, a metal cord, metal straps or strong, mostly absorbable plastic cords. A wire tensioning device or similar device can generate high pressure on the fracture surfaces, which stabilizes the fracture and promotes the healing of the fracture. The procedure is often used in combination with other procedures ( tension belts , plate fixation ).

Patellar fractures (kneecap fractures), for example , but also elongated oblique or spiral fractures in the shaft area of long tubular bones are suitable for this treatment .
