The Cercle des femmes peintres was an association of Belgian female artists founded in Brussels in 1888 . The model for this artists' association was the French Union des femmes et peintres sculpteurs .

history

The aim was to create a common platform for female painters in Belgium, to organize exhibitions and thus to spread the members' works of art to the public. Founding members included Berthe Art , Marie de Bièvre, Louise de Hem, Marguerite Dielman, Marie Heyermans, Alice Ronner , Rosa Venneman, Marguerite Verboeckhoven and Emma Verwee. Many patrons and honorary members support the Cercle, such as Virginie Somzée as President, Eugenie Beauvois as Vice-President, Mary Gasparoli as Secretary as well as H. d'Espiennes, Marie and Henriette de Villermont, Berthe van Tilt and Jenny Hemptine. Other artists, including Jeanne Andrighetti, Alix d'Anethan, Mathilde Dupré l 'Esprit, Mary Gasparilla, Pauline Jamar, Rosa Leigh and Henriëtte Ronner-Knip were also members of the Cercle.

The association organized four group exhibitions - in 1888, 1890, 1891 and 1893 - in Brussels.

The still lifes formed a special thematic focus at the exhibitions . The artists' association enabled not only professional artists but also numerous amateur painters to take part in the art exhibitions. After 1893 the artists' association stopped its activities.
