Ceresa is a genus of the humpback cicadas or humpback chirps ( Membracidae ), a family of round-headed cicadas ( Cicadomorpha ) from the superfamily of the Membracoidea .

The genus contains 34 species that occur exclusively in the Neotropic .

The species of the genus Ceresa are about 6.5 to 10 mm long. Most species are yellowish, green, brown or reddish brown in color, sometimes with light spots. The pronotum is more or less helmet-shaped, with a point backwards and two lateral thorns in front. However, one can only reliably assign species to the genus if one examines the male genital structures. A similar habitus can be found, for example, in the genera Spissistilus , Stictocephala , Stictolobus , Tomogonia and Vestistilus .

Way of life: The kinds of the genus Ceresa live individually on different plants and suck phloem . The eggs are laid on plants, in some species 4 to 15 eggs together, in other species individually. Brood care does not take place. Ceresa nigripectus is a potential pest for alfalfa .
