Ceresin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ceresin is a waxy resin product. It is used as a substitute for beeswax, among other things for wax candles.

Ceresin (also called ceresin, cerosin, cerin, earth wax, mineral wax, ozocerotin or artificial wax) is produced from ozokerite by heating with the addition of 6 to 10% sulfuric acid - an organic mineral that is extracted in mining and essentially consists of hydrocarbons .

The ceresin is treated with charcoal to decolorize it, giving it a light yellow color. Sulfuric acid and caustic soda are used to completely decolorize . A somewhat less productive acid-free production is possible with the use of a large amount of coal , subsequent extraction with gasoline or carbon disulfide , filtration and distillation of the solvents. The thus resulting pure ceresin is white, odorless and has a melting point 62-80  ° C .
