Cereus lamprospermus is a species of plant in the genus Cereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet lamprospermus means 'with shiny seeds'.

description

Cereus lamprospermus grows tree-like with richly branched, upright shoots and reaches heights of 6 to 15 meters. A conspicuous trunk is formed. The cylindrical, gray-green, segmented shoots have a diameter of 10 to 12 centimeters. There are four to seven thick, blunt ribs that are 3 to 7 inches high. The gray, widely spaced areoles on it are almost circular. The resulting 5 to 8 straight thorns are yellowish brown and 1 to 6 centimeters long. Young plants are almost thornless.

The white flowers are 15 to 25 inches long. The 8 to 12 centimeters long fruits are colored orange-brown. They contain a white pulp .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cereus lamprospermus is common in Paraguay and Bolivia . The first description was published in 1899 by Karl Moritz Schumann .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Cereus lamprospermus subsp. lamprospermus
  • Cereus lamprospermus subsp. colosseus

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The subspecies were not recorded separately.
