Strana slobody

Strana slobody (German: Party of Freedom ), abbreviated SSL (also SSl), was a Slovak political party, in communist Czechoslovakia then a bloc party . It existed from 1946 to 1992.

Elections 1946

The SSL was founded on March 1, 1946 by the Slovak politician Vavro Šrobár as "Kresťansko-republikánska strana" (German: Christian-Republican Party ), on April 1, 1946 it then adopted the name "Strana slobody". She claimed to build on Christian traditions and accordingly wanted to address Catholic voters with regard to the upcoming parliamentary election in 1946 . However, these intentions were thwarted by the leadership of the predominantly Protestant Democratická strana party , which in April 1946 reached an agreement with the representatives of the Slovak Catholic community and secured their support.

As a member of the National Front , the SSL was admitted to the elections, but remained far behind in the parliamentary elections with only 3.73 percent of the vote. The party published the weekly Sloboda .

Further developments

After the communist revolution in February 1948, it was brought into line as a bloc party, the party leadership in particular was controlled by the Communist Party of Slovakia , and the democratically oriented members were excluded from the party. After the so-called Velvet Revolution of 1989, an attempt was made to renew it with a Christian program; However, after it received only 1.78 percent of the vote in the 1990 parliamentary election , it was dissolved in 1992.
