Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults
CELTA (spoken /ˈsɛl.tə/) stands for Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults and is a recognized certificate for English language teachers .
overview
Many language schools around the world require their teachers to have sufficient qualifications to teach, especially when it comes to the frequent travel teachers who combine English lessons with their world tour.
The full-time CELTA course lasts four weeks, the part-time course several months. Many different institutions can issue the CELTA certificate. You yourself will be examined and certified by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) .
CELTA is awarded to participants upon completion of the course, which includes a minimum of six hours of instruction with actual English students under supervision . The grade is largely determined by the work done during this phase. There are also a number of tests that are carried out alongside the course and graded according to pass / fail. The grading scheme is Passed (Pass), B and A.
The courses are very time consuming for the participants, especially for those who have little or no teaching experience. Every year around 900 CELTA courses take place in the 280 centers, which are located in 54 countries. More than 10,000 graduates are trained every year. Each course is monitored by an external auditor .
certificate
CELTA is awarded through the Cambridge Assessment (UCLES), an area of Cambridge University . This in turn is accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
history
Today's CELTA replaced the RSA / Cambridge CELTA in 2001 , which in turn was the successor to the RSA / Cambridge CTEFLA (the Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults) since 1996 .
Related certificates
The lesser-known CELTYL (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Young Learners) is also awarded after a four-week course and is more geared towards teaching children.
