biography
Rie Cramer grew up in Indonesia. Her artistic work was shaped by her difficult childhood. Cramer's mother was cool and distant from her all her life, while her father, who was the captain, was rarely with the family.
Cramer began writing children's stories and making drawings. Furthermore, she also illustrated u. a. Fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm , by Charles Perrault or by Hans Christian Andersen . Between 1925 and 1930 she illustrated countless fairy tales and books for young people in a personal, recognizable style for the Leipzig publisher A. Anton & Co.
She later wrote some novels and radio plays under the pseudonyms Marc Holman and Annie Smit .
In total, Cramer was married three times. She felt herself unsuitable to live with anyone and was very attached to her freedom. Cramer spent a lot of time abroad, for example on Mallorca , where she lived with friends for a long time. For health reasons she returned to the Netherlands, where she died a little later.
