The Château d'eau de Montmartre , built in 1835, is a former water reservoir in the 18th arrondissement of Paris and part of the Fontaine du Château d'eau de Montmartre .

The building was built in 1835 in the classicism style. It is surrounded by a small park and separated from the street by a solid, ornately decorated fence. Originally it was used to store water. After its construction, the great water shortage in the village of Montmartre was alleviated. A pump was used to take water from the Seine and convey it here. Another nearby pump was used to transfer the water. As early as the late 19th century, with the completion of the Aqueduc de la Dhuis , the building was no longer used .

The smooth limestone walls are windowless on the ground floor. On the north side facing the street is the double-winged, wooden entrance door, exactly opposite, on the slope, a temple-like porch with a fountain. Above the cornice, there are eight square openings on each of the eight walls (with the exception of the south side) that give light to the interior. On the south side, in the same place, framed by allegorical figures, there is a stone slab with a memorial:

“COMMUNE DE MONTMARTE - L'AN 1835 CETTE FONTAINE FUT ERIGUEE PAR UNE SOCIETE D'ACTIONNAIRES EN VERTU D'UNE CONCESSION DE 99 ANS FAITE PAR UN CONSEIL MAL DU 30 JANVIER 1834 VERON MAIRE. PICARD ET LECUYER ADJOINTS CONSEILLERS MUNICIPAUX EN 1835 "

All stone work is weathered. The dome of the building is crowned with a lantern . The interior is clad with simple wooden panels and apart from a massive buffet on the south wall, there are no other furnishings. It is used for meetings, receptions and vernissages . The building is only open to visitors a few days a year. Titeux de Fresnoy is accepted as the architect , the sculptures are by Bandeville.

The fountain at the rear of the building is fed from a three and a half meter high bronze urn, one of the oldest and largest in Paris. It is decorated with mermaids, tritons and a lion head in high relief. Marine animals can be seen on the handles. A trickle rises in the middle of the urn.

The building is used by the Commanderie du Clos Montmartre wine fraternity .
