The Château de Sombreffe is a castle located in the plain near Sombreffe in the province of Namur ( Wallonia , Belgium ). The history of the complex goes back to the 13th century and is now classified as Patrimoine majeur de Wallonie (Higher Cultural Heritage of Wallonia).

history

The castle was originally a fortress of the defensive line of the Duchy of Brabant - as were Corroy-le-Château , Gembloux , Opprebais and Walhain . In the 13th century it consisted of a simple keep belonging to the lords of Orbais . Over the course of the century, the owners enclosed it with an unconnected quarry stone wall. Later, a second sandstone wall and the northern donjon strengthened the defenses.

In 1446 the castle was married to the Vernembourg (von Virneburg) family, who kept it until 1543. It then came to the Culembourg , Lalaing , Ligne , Oignies and, most recently, Lannoy families .

At the end of the 16th century the upper part of the central donjon, in which the manorial residence was located, fell victim to a fire, but was restored in brickwork in the following century.

In the middle of the 18th century, Duke Eugène de Lannoy de la Motterie , the military governor of Brussels, built a new residence next to the central residential tower, and in the 19th century other agricultural buildings were attached. Thanks to these functions, which tend to weaken the defensive capabilities, the property has remained relatively undamaged and still shows its medieval character.
