location

The Renaissance- style building, built in 1610, is located in the center of Wintringen. It is surrounded by a 1.5 hectare private park. The surrounding property was much larger in the 17th century than it is today and was self-cultivated. Adjacent to the property is the Haff Remich bird sanctuary and the national park with lakes and ponds that extend as far as the Moselle .

history

The name Wintrange was first documented in writing in 987 AD. The Château de Wintrange was built in 1610 by Alexandre de Musset, Edler von Foetz. The main building with the four towers has hardly changed in the last four centuries. Defense works were added during the Thirty Years War (1618–1648).

In the 18th century, the attached barn with the 5th tower was built as a contiguous extension. The barn was mainly used as a horse stable.

In the 1930s the industrialist Nick Schlesser († 1952) discovered the castle while hunting in the surrounding forests. He bought it from Gisbert de Witt in 1938.

The castle was badly damaged in World War II . Initially, German and then American soldiers were stationed in the castle. It was restored by the descendants of Nick Schlesser. In total, the castle has changed hands 18 times over the centuries. On July 6, 2016, the castle was added to the list of national monuments of the municipality of Schengen . The castle is currently (2019) for sale for EUR 5,200,000.00.

Building and property

The main building has a living area of around 550 m². The ground floor about 200 m², the first and second floors about 150 m² and 130 m² respectively.
