The Iltios-Chäserrugg aerial cableway , operated by Toggenburg Bergbahnen AG (until 2008 by Bergbahnen Unterwasser-Iltios Chäserrugg AG (BUIC AG)) and also known as the Chäserruggbahn for short , is a mountain railway in Unterwasser in Toggenburg in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen . It leads from the Iltios to 1339 m above sea level. M. on the Chäserrugg (2262.4 m).

The first application for a license for an aerial tramway from the Iltios to the Chäserrugg was submitted in 1961. After much back and forth the concession was granted in 1966, but the railway was not built due to financial difficulties. The project was only resumed more than ten years later. The construction of the aerial cableway from the Iltios to the Chäserrugg began in 1971, the opening took place in 1972. The aerial cableway Iltios-Chäserrugg is the extension of the cable car Unterwasser-Iltios , which goes from 911 m. ü. M. located underwater leads to the mountain station Iltios. The Chäserruggbahn is part of the Obertoggenburg ski area . In winter it is mainly frequented by skiers and in summer by mountain hikes. In 1981 the Chäserrugg ski area was expanded to include the Ruggschopf-Chäserrugg ski lift . In 2015 a gondola lift was built, which brings a significant increase in capacity and relieves the load on the aerial tramway, and in the same year the new mountain restaurant was opened on the Chäserrugg.
