The chaco chicken ( Nothura chacoensis ) is a species of bird in the cockchafer family (Tinamidae). It was originally considered subspecies of Fleckensteißhuhns ( Nothura maculosa ). The occurrence extends to the Gran Chaco region in northwest Paraguay and in the extreme north-central Argentina .
features
The chaco chicken reaches a size of 23 to 25 centimeters. It is much lighter in color than the closely related spotted cockle. The neck is patterned less conspicuously and the underside is lighter and more ocher-tan than other species of the genus Nothura .
habitat
The Chaco grouse lives in the dry and semi-arid savannah with thorn bush thickets and open woodland.
Way of life
The way of life has so far been little researched. The chaco chicken is probably true to location. There is no information about behavior when foraging for food. The breeding season is in the southern spring / summer between September and November.
Existence and endangerment
Information on the population size of the chaco hen is not available. By BirdLife International is listed as not at risk (least concern). Overgrazing is a major problem in the Chaco region as it prevents the natural cycle of fires and thus encourages the spread of woody plants. The conversion of the habitat to pastureland and agricultural land could have an adverse impact on populations.
