Chaetocnema concinna belongs to the flea beetles (tribe Alticini, subfamily Galerucinae) from the family of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae). The species is known in German as Nordeuropäischer Rübenerdfloh or Knötericherdfloh or Gewöhnlicher Rübenerdfloh.

features

The beetles are 1.8 to 2.4 millimeters in size. They have a black, bronze-colored (rarely coppery or green) metallic shiny basic color. The pronotum is unrimmed at the base, unlike a number of other generic representatives, basal lines, short longitudinal impressions at the base of the pronotum, are not present in this species. Numerous rows of dots run over the wing covers . The basal antennae are yellow-red (the first partially colored brown). The posterior femora are, typical of flea beetles, strongly thickened. All femora are dark, while the tibia and tarsi are yellowish red. Typical for the species of the genus Chaetocnema is a ciliate border on the upper side of the middle and rear rails , which is limited by a tooth.

distribution

Chaetocnema concinna is a Palearctic species. It occurs in almost all of Europe. It is also widespread in North Africa (Morocco) and in West to Central Asia in Israel, the Caucasus region (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russian Caucasus), in Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. The species was introduced in North America. There it was first detected in Massachusetts in 1979 . The species has now established itself in the northeastern United States and in the adjacent part of Canada. Other finds come from Texas and Oregon.

Way of life

The beetles can be found in different habitats: in forests, on fields and in steppe areas. The host plants of Chaetocnema concinna include various knotweed plants of the genera Polygonum , Persicaria , Rheum and Rumex , in particular the bird knotweed ( Polygonum aviculare ). The species occurs occasionally on beets ( beta ) as a pest. "The Northern European beetroot flea overwinters as a beetle in the uppermost soil layers or in the litter [...]. Winter storage is abandoned around the end of April, from May to August the mating season. From mid-May the female [...] lays her eggs the [host] beet plant [...]. The larvae feed [...] on the roots or mines in the leaf. They pupate in June. Young beetles are found on the plants from June / July. They gnaw one more For a while the [host plant] beet leaves and then go to winter quarters from mid-August. "

Similar species

  • Chaetocnema picipes (syn. Chaetocnema heitertingeri Lubischev 1963 ) - the species differs particularly in the male genital area, the aedeagus . There are a number of other species, especially widespread in Asia, which can only be distinguished by the shape of the Aedeagus. Together they form the concinna species group.

Taxonomy

The species was first described as Chrysomela concinna Marsham , 1802. Chaetocema concinna is the type species of the genus Chaetocnema Stephens, 1831 , by subsequent definition by Westwood in 1838 .

The following synonyms are found in the literature : Chaetocnema dentipes ( Koch, 1803 ) (described as Haltica dentipes ), Chaetocnema lewisii Chûjô, 1942 , Chaetocnema semirufescens Pic, 1909 .
