The Chafariz da Rua Escura is a wall fountain in the district of the Portuguese city of Porto .

history

The baroque fountain system was built in the 17th century on Rua Escura to the north of Porto Cathedral . In 1940, when the church was redesigned, it was moved to its current location on the western terrace below the cathedral.

description

The fountain is made of granite . The sculpture of a pelican stands above a bowl-shaped basin , from whose chest the water falls into the basin, from which it then runs into the large fountain basin. The fountain is flanked on both sides by two pilasters designed as caryatids , female figures, which support a concluding ledge . The Portuguese coat of arms can be seen above.
