Chaim Kreiswirth

Chaim Kreiswirth (born 1918 in Wojnicz ; died December 30, 2001 ) was a Polish-Belgian Orthodox rabbi who was also a long-time Grand Rabbi of Antwerp . He was the founder and Rosh Yeshiva of the Merkaz HaTorah Yeshiva in Jerusalem .

Early life

Kreiswirth was born in Wojnicz in 1918 as the son of Rabbi Avrohom Yosef Kreiswirth. Kreiswirth studied the Torah and spent some time in the great Torah schools in Poland and Lithuania . When he applied to the yeshiva Khachmei Lublin , he was examined by their Rosh yeshiva, Rabbi Meir Shapiro.

The German attack on Poland in 1939 forced Kreiswirth to flee. When he arrived in Lithuania, he married the daughter of Rabbi Avrohom Grodzinski. The couple fled to Palestine .

After the Second World War

After the end of the Second World War, Kreiswirth returned to Poland and tried to return Jewish children to Judaism, who had been protected by the Catholic Church for the duration of the war but were to remain in the care of the Catholic Church.

In 1947 Kreiswirth emigrated to the United States of America and headed the Hebrew Theological College in Skokie as Rosh-Yeshiva .

In 1953 Kreiswirth traveled to Antwerp to rebuild the broken Jewish community. Rabbi Kreiswirth dedicated the rest of his life to building up the Antwerp and Belgian community. Among other things, he was Av Beth Din Antwerp.
