The Chaitanya Charitamrita is a holy scripture of the Bengali Vishnuism ( Gaudiya Vaishnavas ). It is a hagiography of the Hindu mystic Chaitanya , who was the founder of the aforementioned tradition.

The work is written in Bengali , but also contains Sanskrit verses. It consists of three parts: Adi Lila , the initial games of Chaitanyas, Madhya Lila, the middle games, and Antya Lila, the later games of Chaitanyas.

Adi Lila

The Adi Lila comprises 17 chapters and describes the first 24 years of Chaitanya's life, from his birth to his ordination as a sannyasin .

Madhya Lila

The middle part, containing 25 chapters, is by far the longest of the three parts. It encompasses the six years of life that Chaitanya spent in Puri and on pilgrimages to Vrindavan and southern India.

Antya Lila

The 20 chapter comprehensive Antya Lila describes the last 18 years of the life of Chaitanya, which he spent in Puri , and his increasing ecstatic moods, which are a sign of deep love for God ( Bhakti ).

The work was written by Krishnadasa Kaviraja and describes Chaitanya as the androgynous double incarnation of Krishna and Radha , his beloved and Shakti .
