Challenger Island , also known as Little Kawau Island , is a small forested island on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
Challenger Island is located in the Hauraki Gulf off the southeast coast of Kawau Island , which rises around 20 km northeast of Orewa off the east coast of the Northland Peninsula . The island is 340 m long and 150 m wide and faces north-south and is located around 210 m from the rocky coast of Kawau Island . The island does not extend beyond a height of 25 m .
In the southwest of the island a few smaller rocky islands rise out of the water, which are counted as Challenger Island .
Flora and fauna
The island is overgrown with Kohekohe , Mahoe and Tawapou and free of possums and wallabies . The Great-winged Petrel (Pterodroma macroptera), known in New Zealand, can nest there undisturbed .
