Chama lazarus is a type of mussel from the family of the hoofed mussels (Chamidae).

features

The unevenly hinged housing is up to 10 cm in size. It is irregularly round or ovoid in outline. Usually the left valve is firmly cemented on a hard ground. The lower flap is arched and cup-shaped, the flat upper flap acts as a lid. The vertebrae are bent forward in a wide spiral. When looking at the firmly grown mussel, the vertebra is turned to the right.

The externally lying ligament is arched like an arch and lies on nymphs. There are two main teeth in the lower flap, a wide front main tooth and a long, narrow rear main tooth and a rear side tooth. In the upper valve there is a long, narrow main tooth and a wide pit, as well as a posterior posterior tooth. The two sphincters are almost the same size. A jacket bay is missing.

The aragonitic shell is thick-walled and very firm. The surface has strong concentric and radial lamellae, which are lengthened and broadened to form leaf-shaped projections. The color is variable, from whitish, yellowish, orange to reddish.

The siphons are short and separated from each other. The foot is greatly reduced. In the edge of the mantle are sensory organs.

Geographical distribution and habitat

Chama lazarus lives in the Indo-Pacific; the species occurs from East Africa to Melanesia, and from the Amami Islands (southern Japan) to Australia. The species lives in the shallow water of coral reefs and other hard substrates, but also in greater water depths.

Taxonomy

The species was established by Carl von Linné as early as 1758 . It is the type species of the genus Chama Linnaeus, 1758.
