Carl Ernst Wilhelm Rettberg (born June 24, 1808 in Schwerin ; † June 1, 1883 there ) was a German painter and early photographer. He was the first daguerreotypist and photographer in Schwerin.

Life

Carl Rettberg was a son of the grand ducal Münz- Wardein Georg Rettberg. In 1840 he studied in Berlin as a pupil of the painter Franz Krüger ( horse Krüger ). As a traveling daguerer typist , he had a studio in Lübeck in 1842 , Breite Straße 821, later Mengstraße 48 and 1844/45 in Mittel Hüxstraße 350. In 1846 he moved to Schwerin. In 1847 he was a member of the trade association and advertised as a daguerrotypist with a studio in Schulstrasse No. 526, on the house of Mr. Carpenter Kania and offered the Mecklenburgische Zeitung his photographic services.

In 1848 he advertised being in possession of the great Voigtlander apparatus ; so he was a competitor to Mrs. Bossart-Biow in Schwerin, the sister of Hermann Biow . After a short time in Münzstraße 291, his studio was from June 1853 to 1870 in Schweriner Königstraße 348 (from 1863 new count 8b ), diagonally opposite the Grand Ducal Palace ; from now on he traded as a photographer. In 1870 or 1871 he moved to Schlachterstrasse 10, then to Marienplatz 8, and from 1875 until the end of his life he lived in Grüne Strasse 3.

Since 1855 his photographs have been included in the picture collection of the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology .

After 1875 he gave up photography and worked as a portrait painter and restorer of paintings.
