The Hüxstraße ( latin : Platea hucorum ) in Johannis district is one of the ribs streets of the medieval town planning of Lübeck Old Town and part of Lübeck's world heritage .

course

Hüxstraße begins at its confluence with Breite Straße opposite the Lübeck town hall and is connected to the market by its arcades . Lübeck's traditional café Niederegger , which helped establish Lübeck's reputation as a marzipan city, is on the corner of Breiten Straße .

The upper part of Hüxstraße has been declared a pedestrian zone up to Königstraße, otherwise since 2005 as a play street / traffic calmed . It then leads further down from the ridge of the old town island to the east into the former valley of the Wakenitz , which, dammed since the early Middle Ages, enclosed Lübeck in the east. The energy generated by the damming has been driving mills since the Middle Ages and generating the necessary pressure for the water arts . Since the end of the 19th century, the Wakenitz in the Lübeck city area has been a real reservoir; it has since been separated from the city wall of the Lübeck city fortifications by the then newly constructed Elbe-Lübeck Canal , which was dug east around the old town outside the ramparts. The Wakenitz drains through a culvert that leads under the canal into the Trave . The Elbe-Lübeck Canal is crossed by the Hüxtertorbrücke at the level of Kanalstrasse , which is roughly level with the former, broken-off Hüxtertor . It leads to a former warder and over the Hüxterdamm to the eastern tangential connection of Lübeck between Burgtor and Mühlentor .

function

In the lower area of the Hüxterdamm it is via the inner tangent of the Kanalstraße as well as the Wahmstraße access to the city center from the east. At the same time, in the central area of the old town it is the only way of traffic flow to the east.
