The Hüxterdamm is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 320 meter long Hüxterdamm is located on the eastern edge of the old town island, in front of the Johannis Quartier . It begins on the street An der Mauer , opposite the confluence of Hüxstraße , and runs eastward, where Kanalstraße meets Hüxterdamm from the north . On the Hüxtertorbrücke the road crosses the Elbe-Lübeck Canal and finally ends where Hüxtertorallee and Falkenstraße meet.

history

The Hüxterdamm was created in 1230, when the Lübeckers, with the express permission of Emperor Friedrich II and Albrecht I of Saxony, laid a dam in the Wakenitz , which was then still considerably wider at the time , in order to damm the river and increase its performance thanks to the artificially increased gradient of the water the municipal mills located on the mill bridge at that time . A grain mill was built on the dam, the height of which is unknown, in 1231 at the latest.

In its earliest form, the Hüxterdamm protruded into the Wakenitz, but did not yet reach the east bank. This extension only took place when it was raised until 1289. From that time on, the dam formed a connection on which it was possible to cross the river. The street leading from the Hüxtertor to the eastern Wakenitzufer was first mentioned by name in a written source in 1388 and was already referred to as Hüxterdamm , based on the Hüxstraße, which it was an extension of.

From 1294 on, the brewery water art was located on the Hüxterdamm , to which the Bürgerwasserkunst joined in 1533 and which together served to supply the city with Wakenitz water until 1867.

In 1852, based on the bridge that led over the tributaries of the Wasserkünste , Hüxterbrücke was officially set as the street name. In 1884 this name was given up again and replaced by the street name Hüxterdamm, which is still valid today .

During the construction of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal, which took the place of the Wakenitz on the east side of the old town, a wide cut through the dam was made in 1898 for the new waterway and the Hüxtertor Bridge was built, which still exists today.
