At the wall
On the wall is a street in Lübeck's old town .
location
The approximately 620 meter long street An der Mauer is located on the southeastern edge of the old town island. It begins on Mühlenstrasse opposite the model railway and then runs in a north-easterly direction, with Düvekenstrasse , Weberstrasse and Stavenstrasse joining one after the other from the west . The Krähenstrasse then crosses at the wall and runs northwards from here. After the intersection with Hüxstraße and Hüxterdamm , An der Mauer meets Fleischhauerstraße and ends there.
history
The street got its name from its course directly on the city wall built in the 13th century . Originally, the entire street on the eastern edge of the old town island from its beginning on Mühlenstraße in the south to the end point on Kaiserstraße near the castle gate in the north was called An der Mauer , interrupted by the section between Fleischhauerstraße and Hundestraße, which is not accessible by a road . It was not until 1884 that the name was restricted to the southern part of the street, which is still valid today, while the northern part was given the new name Wakenitzmauer .
Until the almost complete demolition of the medieval city wall in 1853, the street was only built on on the west side, mainly with modest houses because of the less attractive peripheral location in the shadow of the fortifications, while the east side was occupied by the wall and its towers. Even after the old fortifications were torn down, the eastern side in the southern part of today's road remained only sporadically developed.
