Mühlenbrücke (street)
The Mühlenbrücke is a street in Lübeck's old town .
location
The approximately 380-meter-long mill bridge, oriented in a slight curve to the southeast, is located in the southern part of the old town island. It is the continuation of Mühlenstrasse and begins at the intersection with the Musterbahn and An der Mauer streets , directly at the Alter Zolln . The Mühlenbrücke crosses the Wakenitz flowing through the Krähenteich into the Mühlenteich , pierces the former ramparts and crosses the Elbe-Lübeck Canal on the Mühlenbrücke before it ends at the Mühlentorplatz roundabout in the suburb of St. Jürgen , Lübeck's largest district.
history
Today's street Mühlenbrücke was originally outside the medieval city wall and was unspecifically referred to as Torstraße . It began on the field side of the inner mill gate and crossed the Wakenitz dammed here on the actual mill bridge, on which the oldest municipal water mills were located until 1290 and a fulling mill until 1860 before it merged into the road to Ratzeburg .
It was only after the inner mill gate, the last part of the mill gate, was demolished in 1861 and the building was later released for development, the mill bridge emerged as an inner city street. This late point in time is also reflected in the development, which consists almost exclusively of multi-storey Wilhelminian style houses in the style of the late 19th century . From 1880 to 1884 the new street was called Mühlenthorbrücke and since then the current name.
