The canal street is a street of Lübeck .

location

The approximately 1.23 kilometer long canal road runs along the entire north-eastern edge of the old town island. It begins on the An der Untertrave road at the lift bridge over the Elbe-Lübeck Canal below the Burgtor and then, parallel to the course of the canal, leads south in a wide curve. Coming from the old town, Rosenpforte , Weiter Lohberg , Glockengießerstraße , Hundestraße , Dr.-Julius-Leber-Straße and Fleischhauerstraße flow one after the other , until the Kanalstraße finally meets the Hüxterdamm and ends.

history

Kanalstrasse is one of the youngest streets in Lübeck's old town. Up until the late 19th century , where it runs today, there was still the Wakenitz , which was very wide at the time and , with its flat, marshy banks, reached close to today's Wakenitz wall. The construction of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal from 1896 to 1900 completely changed this area: The Wakenitz disappeared in favor of the narrower canal with its fortified banks. The new strip of land between the Wakenitzmauer and the canal was opened up by a continuous road, which in 1901 was given the name Kanalstraße , which is still valid today .

The fact that Kanalstrasse is a completely new development that was created late can also be seen in its construction: only in the northern section near the castle gate is there a closed development on the city side, otherwise commercial operations and open spaces predominate. The strip of land between the street and the canal bank was occupied until the 1990s by storage areas and companies that were originally set up here because of the immediate location at the inland waterway vessels . This use is now a thing of the past, the former industrial park is now almost exclusively used for parking spaces .
