The lift bridge , whose name actually stables bridge (named after the south situated above stables ), is a movable bridge , each with its own supporting structure for railway, road vehicles and pedestrians in Lübeck . It is one of more than 200 bridges in Lübeck and has been a listed technical monument since 1988.

history

The lift bridge was built in connection with the construction of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal . It leads to the north of Lübeck's old town island at the confluence of the Stadt- Trave and the Kanal-Trave via the Klughafen and connects to the Burgtorhafen in the St. Gertrud district . The bridge was built from steel between 1896 and 1900 according to the plans of the hydraulic engineer Peter Rehder , the bridge towers were built in the neo-Gothic style. Kaiser Wilhelm II inaugurated it on June 16, 1900.

The bridge worked for more than 80 years without any major problems. A first fundamental overhaul was carried out in 1984/1985 for 2.5 million marks. Over the decades, the disturbances increased. In 2004 she received new handcrafted drive wheels. In September 2009, she was banned for two weeks. The roadway was repaired and the suburban tower on the northern bank received the missing spire again. Since the track of the Lübeck port railway is no longer used here, the westernmost supporting structure (railway part of the bridge) was decommissioned in November 2009 and is now in its raised state.

The bridge should be renewed by 2013 for 13.2 million euros, because there are no more replacements for technical parts. The outer shape should be preserved.

This did not happen because the wishes of the city of Lübeck required rescheduling, which the UNESCO World Guardians objected to. The measures were put on hold and only urgently needed repairs were carried out, as in 2017 when the bridge was completely closed from March 5 to April 20. A new feasibility study has been commissioned. The lift bridge can be rebuilt in 2020 at the earliest; the work is expected to take three years.

The bridge belongs to the federal government and the Lübeck Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .

Structure and technology

The lift bridge consists of three separate supporting structures, seen from west to east, initially for the railway (single-track, span 45 meters, width between the main girders 5.85 m, weight 258 t), in the middle for road traffic (two-lane, span 42, 24 m, width 7.95 m, weight 245 t) and next to it for pedestrian traffic (span 42.24 m, width 3.3 m, weight 52.3 t). The supporting structures for the port railway and road traffic can be raised hydraulically by 4.2 and 3.2 m respectively, the supporting structure for pedestrians is raised and immobile. The passage width for shipping is 33 meters.

The bridge tower, a 25-meter-high brick building in the late neo-Gothic style of the Wilhelmine era on a square base, is located on the south bank ( old town side ) between the supporting structures for the railroad and road traffic, the control station for the bridge personnel and the hydraulic cylinders , one of which is the Pressure generated to lift the railway bridge, the other that for the road bridge. They are driven by pressure from racks on the counterweights, which are also located in the building, each with an electric motor of 19 kW. The power is transmitted through 200 liters of a mixture of glycerine and water. The hydraulic lines are located on the fixed pedestrian bridge. The supporting structures are made of steel and 50,000 rivets were used during construction .
