The Weite Lohberg is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 170 meter long Weite Lohberg is located in the northeast of the old town island, in the Jakobi quarter . It begins at Langen Lohberg , runs eastwards, crosses the Wakenitz wall halfway and ends at Kanalstrasse .

history

The road 1302 with the Latin - Low German mixed name Nova civitas in Poggenpole (New settlement near the frog pond) is mentioned for the first time in a document , which refers to the Langen Lohberg, which was called Poggenpohl at the time . The name suggests that this area on the banks of the Wakenitz formed a swampy lowland before it was built up, some of which did not take place until the end of the 13th century . 1308, the Latin name is simply fossa (lane), then in 1431 Fossa immersive Lobergh (alley or Lohberg) derived from the fact that the residents in the area Lohgerber the broad and ample space for storage of their bidding road Lohe used. In 1458 the name Lohberghe is used. The current name was officially established in 1852, to distinguish it from Langen Lohberg, which was known identically for a long time.

Until the beginning of the 20th century , the Weite Lohberg was only half as long as it is today; originally it ended at the Wakenitz wall , which ran along the inside of the medieval city wall . On the other side of the wall there was already the flat, marshy bank of the Wakenitz, which was then still considerably wider. During the construction of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal between 1896 and 1900, a 140-meter-wide strip of virgin land was heaped up here and the Lohberg area extended down to the newly laid canal road.

The Weite Lohberg occupies a special urban development position: It is the only historical street in Lübeck's old town where the houses have front gardens .
