Chandrasekhar Joshi

Chandrasekhar Joshi (born July 22, 1953 in India ) is an Indian-American physicist who deals with plasma physics and in particular with novel particle accelerator concepts that result from plasma physics.

Joshi studied at the University of London , where he earned his bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering in 1974, and received his doctorate in applied physics from Hull University in 1979 . He then spent two years in plasma physics research at the National Research Council of Canada, before moving to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1980 , where he has been Professor of Electrical Engineering since 1988. He has been Director of the Center for High Frequency Electronics since 2005 and heads UCLA's Neptune Laboratory for Advanced Accelerator Research.

In addition to investigations into new accelerator concepts from plasma physics, he deals with laser-plasma interactions and instabilities, light sources based on plasma physics and laser fusion. In particular, he investigated non-linear optical phenomena in plasmas, for example he succeeded in the first experimental detection of four-wave mixing , an instability in stimulated Raman forward instability, resonant self-focusing, frequency shifts due to ionization fronts and non-linear coupling of electron plasma Waves.

He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (1990), the Institute of Physics (1998) and the IEEE (1993). In 2008 he received the Advanced Accelerator Concepts Prize.

In 2006 he received the James Clerk Maxwell Prize in Plasma Physics for his insights and leadership in the application of plasma physics concepts to high energy acceleration of electrons and positrons and for his creative exploration of related areas of plasma physics .
