Chandrayaan program
The Chandrayaan program (from Hindi Chandra for moon , yaan for car, vehicle ) is the lunar program of the Indian Space Agency (ISRO).
Missions
So far, two Chandrayaan spacecraft have been launched . The Chandrayaan-1 orbiter reached the moon in October 2008 and was operational for ten months. The Chandrayaan-2 probe - consisting of an orbiter, a lander and a rover - launched in July 2019 and arrived in a lunar orbit after a month. The Chandrayaan-2 orbiter is expected to operate for about seven years. The condition of the lander and rover is unclear after the former crashed hard on the lunar surface instead of a soft landing .
A follow-up Chandrayaan-3 mission , consisting of only one lander with a rover, is planned for 2021. India is also planning a major lunar mission together with the Japanese space agency (JAXA) for 2024 .
