Chaovarat Chanweerakul ( Thai : ช ว รัตน์ ชาญ วีร กุล , pronunciation: [ t̠͡ɕʰáwárát t̠͡ɕʰaːnwiːrákun ], born June 7, 1936 in Bangkok , Thailand ) is a Thai politician. Between December 2 and 15, 2008, he temporarily ran the affairs of the Prime Minister of Thailand.

Life

Chaovarat is married to Tassani Chanweerakul ( นาง ทัศนีย์ ชาญ วีร กูล ) and has two sons and a daughter.

Education and career

He completed his economics degree at Thammasat University in 1966 , and in 2006 he received an honorary doctorate in philosophy (business administration department) from Ramkhamhaeng University .

From 1962 to 1994 he was managing director at "Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction", later a consultant for this company.

From 1994 to 1997 he was Deputy Minister of Finance in two governments ( รัฐมนตรี ช่วย ว่า การ กระทรวง การคลัง กระทรวง การคลัง ). On August 2, 2008 he was appointed Minister of Health ( รัฐมนตรี ว่า การ กระทรวง สาธารณสุข ).

On December 2, 2008, the Constitutional Court of Thailand ordered the dissolution of the Phak Palang Prachachon ( People's Power Party , PPP) and two other coalition parties. At the same time, the leading members of these parties were banned from political activity for the next five years. In addition to Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat , numerous other cabinet members were dismissed from their posts. Since Chaovarat - also a member of the PPP - was not a leading member of the PPP, he was the only candidate for the possible office of a new prime minister.

Chaovarat was Minister of the Interior in the Abhisit Vejjajiva government . He was sworn in on December 20, 2008.
